The toughest desert race in North America, the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 begins today. This willl be the 41st anniversary of the event.

Starting and finishing in Ensenada, Mexico, just across the U.S. border, the elapsed-time race this year leads nearly 375 teams from 39 states and 24 countries 631.35 miles around the Baja peninsula on motorcycles, ATVs, cars and trucks.

The first motorcycles will enter the course at 6:30 a.m., with the first four-wheel vehicles expected to start around four hours later. Vehicles will leave in 30-second intervals. While every participant will have 31 hours to complete the distance, the fastest finishers are expected to complete the course in about 14 hours.

After a very successful 2008 season, which saw a YZ450F take home the prestigious 2008 AMA Supercross title and a YZ250F win the 2008 West Coast AMA Lites Supercross title, Yamaha Motor Corporation is proud to announce our complete Supercross/Motocross race teams for the 2009 season.

The Factory Yamaha Supercross/Motocross team will consist of Broc Hepler, Josh Hill and Grant Langston. Both Josh and Broc are eager to begin the new season on their YZ450Fs, each with stronger race credentials with Josh taking a very emotional win at the Minneapolis Supercross and Broc making a very successful return from injuries to score a podium at the final AMA National round at Steel City. Due to an unfortunate vision problem Grant was forced to sit out the majority of the season but looks forward to mentoring the young riders as a team advisor in 2009 until his vision improves.

Team L&M/San Manuel Band of Mission Indians made one of the biggest moves of the off season signing James Stewart to ride under their tent. Hot off a perfect outdoor season, US Open victory and dominating Bercy Supercross performance, James enters the 2009 AMA Supercross season with a ton of confidence in himself and his 2009 YZ450F. Fellow Floridian Kyle Chisholm moves up to the 450 Class as the team’s second rider.

After a solid freshman effort the Joe Gibbs’ Racing/Spike Energy/Toyota team has signed Josh Grant and New Zealander Cody Cooper to lead their 2009 charge. After a prolific career on 250Fs, Josh is really looking forward to making the jump into the premier class on a YZ450F. Cooper initially got his feet wet in the US in 2007, but mounted a full scale attack on the AMA Motocross series in 2008, earning a few podiums and finishing up fifth overall. The 2009 season will see him stay in the States full time, racing both the Supercross and Motocross series.

For the 2009 season Star Racing will be Yamaha’s official 250F team. Having worked together since 2005, Star Racing has proven itself a legitimate competitor and a great ambassador for the Yamaha brand. The team will consist of Matt Lemoine, Broc Tickle, Darryn Durham and Michael Hall. Which coast each rider will compete on is yet to be decided.

Yamaha Racing Division Manager Keith McCarty had this to say about the upcoming year, “It’s very comforting knowing that we’ve aligned ourselves with some of the best teams and riders in the industry and we look forward to a very successful 2009 Race Season”

Yamaha rider and one of the leading figures in Women’s World Championship motocross, Katherine Prumm, was given good cause for optimism after a seven hour operation to repair three broken vertebrae was successful earlier this week. The 20 year old New Zealander is now facing a six month period of recuperation and rehabilitation.

Prumm damaged her T6, T9 and T12 in a practice crash last week and the subsequent surgical procedure involved reparation through her back and extensive work to fix the tendons surrounding the troublesome and most seriously affected area around the T12. Prumm has full feeling and use of her legs and can look ahead to recovery after being fitted with a custom-made brace for her torso that must be worn for three months. After the shock of the accident and the aftermath – in which she briefly lost sensation in her limbs – the post-op news and perspective at last provided some much needed hope for the racer. ‘Somebody was watching over me, I was really lucky not to be paralysed and I am looking forward to getting fit and strong and to being back where I want to be,’ she said.

The YZ250F rider, who led the 2008 FIM Women’s World Championship before her season was curtailed by a broken collarbone, over-jumped a triple step-down and in the ensuing tumble caused damage to her spine with the T6, T9 and T12 most affected.

Prumm who was training in preparation for attempts at the 2009 title as well as national success both in New Zealand and Australia was naturally shell-shocked with the injury set-back.

We wish her a speedy recovery.

The AMA/Maxxis EnduroCross Championship Series presented by Lucas Oil, will wrap-up it’s six-race national series on Saturday night in Las Vegas and crown the 2008 AMA/Maxxis EnduroCross Champion; but crowning the pro-level champion is not the only order of business at this incredibly exciting event. The Orleans Arena fans will see dozens of amateur competitors from around the nation battle for their chance at a national title in the inaugural AMA EnduroCross Grand Championships (EXGC).

In the expert class, Monster Energy Kawasaki ’s Ricky Dietrich is leading the championship by 10 points over his veteran supercross teammate, Damon Huffman (111 to 101). Lucas Oil KTM’s Colton Haaker sits in third with 86 points, while international standout, Taddy Blasuziak, of Red Bull KTM has fought his way back into fourth place with 81 points after missing two races due to injury earlier in the season. Zip-Ty Suzuki’s Nick Brozovich and Christini/KTM/BTOSports.com’s Geoff Aaron sit in fifth and sixth respectively (76/75 pts). Wrapping up the top 10 are Team Green Kawasaki’s Jamie Lanza, Zip-Ty Suzuki legend, Ty Davis , Canada ’s Bobby Prochnau and trials convert, Phil Smage.

The battle for the championship between Monster Energy Kawasaki ’s Ricky Dietrich and Damon Huffman, along with a virtual who’s who of world renowned off-road racers in the field, has set a very interesting stage for “The Vegas Finale.” As Monster Energy Kawasaki would likely be assured of the championship if either of their two guys makes the main event, Team Red Bull KTM is attempting to make that feat very tough by stacking the field full of their KTM factory backed riders. Joining Blasuziak at this Saturday’s event will be recent EnduroCross convert Mike Brown, ISDE captain Kurt Caselli, GNCC star Nate Kanney, WORCS standout Justin Soule, as well as KTM factory test rider and retired supercross star, Sebastian Tortelli!

Also joining them in the battle will be previous Vegas Finale podium finishers, FMF Suzuki’s WORCS racer, Nathan Woods and current World Enduro Champion Mika Ahola of Finland , who will be riding for Carey Hart’s Rockstar Hart & Huntington team! Add Monster Energy Kawasaki ’s 4-time AMA/FMF Racing National Hare & Hound Champion, Destry Abbott and Am-Pro Yamaha’s AMA National Hare Scrambles East champ, Jason Raines… and you have a stacked field of riders making it impossible to predict the results!

“This is easily the most talented field of riders we have ever seen for a Maxxis EnduroCross,” claims series originator, Eric Peronnard. “Just making the Main Event is going to be tough… let alone winning the race! It’s going to be a battle for both the event win and the championship!”

As the premier level championship will certainly be the Main Act of the night, it will be well supported by the newly organized amateur championships, the AMA EnduroCross Grand Championships. Similar to motocross’ Loretta Lynn’s championships, and designed specifically for amateur level racers, the EXGC winner-take-all format allows a competitor to qualify at a regional event, then earn a #1 plate by winning at the Las Vegas Finals. EXGC champions will be crowned in four separate championship classes and the unbelievable racing action will offer more than its share of entertainment.

EnduroCross tracks incorporate various elements of Off-Road racing into a supercross-style setting, including rocks, boulders, logs, sand, mud, a water-hole… and even a few special obstacles like giant tires! Known as the “toughest racing on two wheels,” this indoor version of extreme off-road racing will keep you on your feet! The series, presented by Lucas Oil Products, will be captured by the Versus Network, to be aired on the popular grassroots racing program, the Lucas Motorsports Hour. With its excitement and unpredictability, the series championship has come down to the wire and looks to be an amazing event in Las Vegas! Don’t miss your chance to see AMA/Maxxis EnduroCross and be sure to log-on to www.Versus.com for local airing dates/times for the Lucas Motorsports Hour.

EnduroCross FINAL PACKED WITH TALENT

Team Troy Lee Designs / Honda announced today a brand new roster for the upcoming 2009 AMA Supercross Series.

Joining the team will be: No. 47 Jimmy Albertson, No. 42 Jake Moss, and No. 63 Chris Blose

All three riders will compete in the west coast lites series which kicks off January 3 at Angels Stadium in Anaheim.

Jimmy Albertson turned pro in 2006 after a string of amateur victories, including a Loretta Lynn’s 125cc Championship. In 2008, Jimmy started to turn some heads with a fifth place finish in the lites division at Daytona Supercross. The factory teams took notice. Amid the outdoor nationals, American Honda gave Albertson the opportunity of a lifetime. He was offered a ride to fill in for the injured Ben Townley on a factory Red Bull/Honda 450. Jimmy answered the call with sixth place finishes at Washougal and Steel City. Jimmy will live and train in Corona, CA so that he will be close to Troy Lee Designs.

“I am stoked to be a part of this team,” said Albertson upon arriving at TLD. “The helmets and gear are so cool, and the bikes look amazing. I can’t wait until Anaheim.”
At the young age of 20, Chris Blose already has three years of Supercross experience on his resume. In 2008 he had three top ten finishes in the west coast lites series and he backed that up with four top ten finishes in the 450 class at the nationals. He will get the chance to showcase his talent this year with the TLD team and it is an opportunity he does not plan to squander.

“I am so excited to be working with this team,” says Blose. “The opportunity to have a top-level bike under me and to work with a crew that has that much experience is something I won’t take for granted. I know I can be in the top five on a regular basis with that kind of support behind me. I can’t wait.”
Jake Moss will be missing at the opening rounds of the series but you will see his No. 42 machine under the TLD transporter. Just days after signing his contract, Jake crashed and suffered a serious injury to one of his thoracic vertebrae. The injury is healing well and Jake plans to be back on the bike before the first of the year. Expect to see Moss enter the fray sometime mid-season.

In addition to the new riders, TLD has made some other changes to its program. Bicycle legend Brian Lopes will be available to the riders for guidance on their physical training. David Pingree has been appointed to the Team Manager position, and will handle logistics and media relations. Jeff Ward and Jeremy McGrath will act as riding coaches for the team, getting the riders mentally prepared for each event and elevating them to the next level. Their championship-winning experience alone is a powerful tool for Jimmy and Chris as they prepare for battle.

Team owner Troy Lee has tremendous confidence in the changes, and is excited to get the ball rolling for 2009. “I think we’ve made some great changes to the team, and hopefully we’re onto something big. I’d sure love to get some of our guys up on the podium this year and I think we’re definitely in a position to do that.”

Once again we are involved in a fight to preserve our right to recreate on our own property in Pennsylvania. York County seems to be the epicenter of this controversy with eight anti-OHV ordinances going to vote to date. So far we have successfully defeated three of these anti-OHV ordinances, but the list continues.
The next battleground is Fairview Township, York County. Often townships already have ordinances in place to protect residents against trespassing, noise, and dust generated by neighbors; Fairview Township is no exception. The present Township Ordinance Chapter 10, Part 3, http://www.twp.fairview.pa.us/ 2008ords/ pdffiles/2330-010.pdf , addresses just these issues. Yet, because of one angry neighbor these rules are not enough, and the township is willing to add a new chapter in exchange for his silence. The wise and fair alternative would be to adopt a simple dust ordinance to cover residents from undesirable nuisances. Then a resident could file a nuisance complaint without singling out a specific group such as the OHV enthusiasts.

On December 1st @ 7:00 PM. Fairview Township supervisors will be meeting to discuss and vote on Ordinance 2008-11, which will unfairly impact residents who ride on their own property and turn recreating into a crime. We need everyone’s help. Your letters of support and attendance are desperately needed to defeat Ordinance 2008-11. Please mark the 1st on your calendars and come support the residents of Fairview Township
Please review the attached copy of this proposed ordinance. The highlights of the new ordinance will require OEM exhaust, a 300 foot property line setback, no riding 50 feet from a stream, dust restrictions, a four rider limit, and alternating operating hours. The Fairview Township Ordinance 2008-11 has some particularly weak and hard to enforce provisions.

• OEM exhaust? This requirement demonstrates a lack of understanding of what they’re trying to regulate. Anyone who rides knows that being factory installed equipment has nothing to do with how loud something is. A factory exhaust can be louder than many after market exhausts and can be easily modified to be louder. A measured decibel level is what’s needed, and already exists as a township ordinance.

• No riding 50 feet from a stream? What about a bridge? This provision coupled with the 300 ft setback effectively makes anyone with less than 4 acres a criminal if they ride on their own property.

• The 300 foot setback is problematic as well. Who’s measuring the set back? Is everyone involved willing to get their property lines marked? Are the police required to witness the riding and then measure the distance? If you have permission to ride on your neighbor’s property, do you have to carry the written permission slip? What about the person whose property borders several other properties, do you need written permission from all landowners or just the owners you ride within 300 feet of?

• Riding time limitations are unbalanced. Why one on and two off? Why not one on and one off? The proposal seems arbitrary and discriminatory to the riders without accomplishing anything

Again, please review the attached copy of this proposed ordinance. Formulate your own opinion, gather your thoughts, write a letter opposing Ordinance 2008-11, and send to Fairview Township Supervisors, 599 Lewisberry Road, New Cumberland, PA 17070 or call 717-901-5215. If writing isn’t your strong point, I will be posting a form letter on November 19th at www.paohv.org , which can be printed and signed.

Remember, clear your calendar for December 1, 2008 at 7:00 PM and attend this meeting in force. We have had great success with Anti-OHV Ordinances when we pack the house. I realize many of you may be off deer hunting when we need you the most, so please send your family members as your representative. This is a family sport, and many outsiders do not realize the scope of OHV recreation. The meeting location is Fairview Township Building, 599 Lewisberry Road, New Cumberland, PA 17070.
We must stand as one unified voice, and stop this snowball effect from converting our recreational fun into a crime.

Denny Mann
PaOHV Executive Director

KTM Enduro Factory Team racer Taddy Blazusiak got his Indoor Enduro World Cup campaign off to a solid start ending the opening round of the series, the Barcelona Indoor Enduro, as runner-up to Spaniard Ivan Cervantes. Performing consistently throughout the opening round of the IEWC series, Taddy set the third fastest lap time during the event’s qualifying session before comfortably moving through his heat races and into the finals. With the clear goal of winning the championship Blazusiak rode hard and fast, but importantly with improved control and consistency.

Kirssi on the Podium Again!
Author:

The 66th edition of the EICMA motorcycle exhibition ended last weekend, with more than 500,000 visitors attending the two-wheeled show that took place at the Milan exhibition center. Part of the many exhibitions on offer was the unique MotoLive show – a four-day entertainment extravaganza held in a massive 50 square mile area, with a wide choice of motorsport action to see, including stunt riding, races and special displays, including minibikes, supermoto, quad racing, trials, motocross, drag racing, MX freestyle and enduro.

The second day of action in the Motolive arena saw the best European Enduro riders entertain the crowds, racing on a course that highlighted their bike skills. Thanks to good weather, the stands were packed and everybody enjoyed some great racing, as well as the chance to see the factory BMW G 450 X and Simo Kirssi in action.

Simo Kirssi has every reason to be pleased with his performance in Milan, as the BMW factory rider finished third at this invitational ‘MotoLive Endurocross’. This excellent result was achieved against many top riders, who were using the event to prepare for the forthcoming Indoor Enduro World Cup, which kicks off in Barcelona, Spain, on November 16th, with Simo among the starters.

Kirssi, a renowned cross country expert, accustomed well to the sprint character of the enduro races at EICMA and used the power of his BMW G 450 X to quickly find his feet in this new (to him) discipline. The Finn ended his first qualifier in third place before winning his second heat. BMW’s second representative, Jeff Goblet, unfortunately failed to qualify for the main event.

The main event saw Kirssi engaged in a fierce battle with the more experienced Ivan Cervantes, ‘extreme’ enduro specialist Taddy Blazusiak and 2008 E1 Enduro World Champion Mika Ahola. The quartet kept chasing eventual winner Antoine Meo – who led from the start and won in style on a Husqvarna – but were unable to catch him, despite putting on a superb show for the crowds. It was Cervantes who finally came second, after having crashed on the first corner and then making an amazing comeback, with Simo Kirssi rounding out the final podium place. The ‘flying Finn’ was the highest placed four-stroke 450 rider in the field.

Simo Kirssi: “Obviously I’m very pleased with the result. During the first qualifier I missed the jump out of the gate and had to take my time watching the competition. The second qualifier went perfect – it even caught me a little by surprise to be winning. Anyway, it was fun. The main event proved to be a tough battle. Antoine started so quickly that it was impossible to catch him, but Ivan, Taddy, Mika and I had a massive fight going on throughout the race, so to finish on the podium is a great feeling.”

KTM has acquired two new talented Enduro riders for its factory team line-up for the 2009 World Championship season.

Frenchman Johnny Aubert, the newly crowned E2 World champion will be onboard for the Orange team and Italian Simone Albergoni rides for KTM in the E1 class.

Team boss Fabio Farioli is very positive for the 2009 season. “We are after the titles in 2009,” he said. “We’re now preparing the bikes and we expect the riders to start serious riding training at the beginning of December.”

Albergoni gets a new taste of orange in E1

Simone Albergoni, who had his first experience with the KTM team four years ago, returns to ride in E1 together with new recruit, the Finnish team rookie Eero Remes. The 27-year-old first felt the passion of motor sports at just three years old and his appointment to the KTM Factory Team will, according to Farioli, be his big chance to take the title in the class where he was second in 2007 and third in 2008 behind KTM’s Ivan Cervantes. Albergoni, a quiet and concentrated competitor has special talents riding in very hard conditions. “He is extremely fast over rocks and is very good in the mud and over difficult terrain,” Farioli said. The more experienced Italian will also be a mentor for Remes in his first year with the factory team. Both riders will compete on KTM 250 EXC-F machines.

KTM welcomes Johnny Aubert to E2

Johnny Aubert, who took the E2 title in 2008 is also no stranger to a KTM, which he rode (for KTM France) to finish third in the French Junior Championships in 1995. The now 28-year-old Frenchman grew up in France near the Belgian border and up to 2005, rode in the MX world championships. He too was already onboard two wheels at a tender age and first raced at just four years old. With his previous riding experiences on the MX courses of France and Belgium, it comes as no surprise that Aubert is a great all rounder on grass and muddy conditions, while, according to Farioli, is also fast improving in the Extreme tests. Farioli describes Aubert as “very talented” and is looking forward to a rewarding E2 season. The Frenchman will ride a 450 EXC-R in E2 together with KTM factory team stalwart Italian Alessandro Belometti on a KTM 250 EXC. Belometti joined Aubert and Salminen on the podium at the end of the 2008 World Championship season.

Strong, tried and true KTM line-up in E3

The KTM Factory Team also goes into the big bike category with a proven and very strong line-up with 2008 E3 champion Samuli Aro of Finland riding a KTM 530 EXC-R and teammate Ivan Cervantes of Spain on a KTM 300 EXC. Cervantes, second in E1 in 2008 thus returns to his favourite category.

The coming season will offer the riders a rich choice of terrain and venues, starting with the first two rounds in Portugal and Spain, then continuing to Finland, Slovakia, Mexico, Greece and France.

Stewart sensational at Bercy
Author:

San Manuel Yamaha rider James Stewart continued a perfect start to his career in ‘blue’ by taking his YZ450F to a dominant streak of victories at the 26th Bercy Supercross in Paris. The 22 year old AMA Motocross Champion owned all three nights in the French capital to become ‘King of Bercy’ at his first attempt.

The prestigious European Supercross meeting saw a Yamaha upon the top step of the podium for the second year in succession as Stewart followed in the footsteps of Chad Reed and swept away from the pack in every race that he started. Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings all belonged to the American in what was just his second meeting on the YZ450F after ruling the lucrative US Open in Las Vegas last month.

“That was an awesome experience, it was like the Motocross of Nations but louder!” he said. “I was a bit shocked to see my times in practice so I knew I had good speed. The track is pretty simple but quite good. There are only a couple of places where you can make time and I took advantage of that.”

“We did another week of testing after US Open and I feel good and the team is working well,” he continued. “I think we will make some improvements but I have to say that although the bike is different to what I had before it is way better. I feel really good on the turns and very relaxed; my corner speed has got faster on the Yamaha. It is an exciting time.”

MX Sports, producer of the Air Nautiques/AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee, has finalized the schedule for the 2009 Air Nautiques/AMA Regional Championships.

The 12 Regional Championships coincide with the 7 different regions across the country and provide the second and final stage of the qualification process. The Regional Championships consist of a three moto format and longer motos in an effort to prepare the participants for the three twenty-minute motos at the National.

“Thousands of riders attempt to qualify for the AMA Amateur National at Loretta Lynn’s, yet many will only make it as far as their Regional Championship. Therefore, we want to insure that our members are treated to the most fair and professional event possible,” says the American Motorcyclist Association’s Kevin Crowther. “The AMA and MX Sports worked together to create this year’s schedule, and we’re pleased with this year’s AMA Amateur Regional Championship line-up.”

“When selecting the tracks we have to be mindful of their location within the region, the size of the facility and the ability of the organizer,” says MX Sports Director Tim Cotter. “We are confident that the 2009 selections meet these high standards.”

OEM manufacturers provide technical support at every event and offer substantial contingency programs for the participants. The amateur team members often view the Regional Championships as the second biggest race of the year for their individual programs.

Kawasaki Team Green Motocross Supervisor Ryan Holliday remarks, “The Regional qualifier events are important to Kawasaki for several reasons. One is that this is final step for our riders to qualify for the AMA Amateur National Championship. Second, it provides a great opportunity to have our Kawasaki support vehicles on the road attending regional level events where they can provide technical assistance and service to all Kawasaki riders in attendance. We recognize the importance of supporting racers at all levels across the country and the regional qualifiers enable us to reach thousands of our customers in just a few weeks and hopefully welcome some new customers to the Kawasaki family along the way.”

Additions to the schedule for the 2009 season include a South Central Youth Regional in Lake Whitney, Texas. “It is an honor to have Lake Whitney run as a part of the most prestigious motocross program in the country,” says Alan McWilliams, operator of the Lake Whitney track. “We can’t wait to get our race started.”

Also, the famous Budds Creek MX Park in Maryland, host of the 2007 FIM Motocross of Nations, joins the Regional Schedule for the first time in over a decade. “It has been a long time since we have hosted a regional at our facility,” says Jonathan Beasley. “We are excited about the opportunity to showcase Budds Creek to the Youth riders in the Northeast.”

Dunlop Taking Mini O’s Racing Results Around The World
