“Survivor” Motorcycle-Style - One Woman and Five Men Vie for Three Spots on U.S. Team Competing Against World’s Best in Tunisia, October 15-24
Woodcliff Lake, NJ - August 27, 2008… Six intrepid motorcyclists - the “Spartanburg Six” - will travel to BMW’s Performance Center in Spartanburg, SC, August 28, to compete for three spots on the team representing the USA in the inaugural BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy in October. Following a day of technical skills competition, the “Spartanburg Six” will become the “Tunisia Three,” representing the USA at the international competition in Tunisia, October 15-24.

The six riders who will be evaluated at BMW’s Performance Center in Spartanburg (from an initial field of 96 applicants) come from all over the USA and include Jason Adams from New York; Bill Dragoo from Oklahoma; Kevan Harder from California; Brad Hendry from Colorado; Jim Stoddard from New York and Brienne Thompson from California.

Bill Dragoo, one of the “Spartanburg Six”, is delighted at his selection and at the age of 52, will be the oldest competitor.

“I feel blessed to make the cut as one of the six finalists for BMW’s GS Trophy in Tunisia and can’t wait to compete alongside four other men and one woman in Spartanburg, South Carolina. For me, this is the chance of a lifetime and should I succeed at Spartanburg, it will be the culmination of a lifetime of preparation for just such a challenge. It is a chance for one last hurrah, (hopefully not quite the last) and to represent the United States in a World Class event. I appreciate the prayers and support of my friends across Oklahoma and beyond.”

Brienne Thomson, the only female competitor, is a highly competitive young motorcyclist, who has racing experience both on- and off-road. She also competes quite successfully in triathlon events.

“The ability to ride with the best at BMW’s Performance Center on a brand new BMW F 800 GS is going to be an experience - an everlasting memory - no matter what happens,” said Brienne. “I’m honoured to be a part of the GS Trophy. As the only female in this high-ranking group, I will do my best to be an inspiration to other females to be involved in this sport of adventure. I am fully prepared to go to Tunisia; I have been to Africa before and I can’t wait to go back.”

In Spartanburg, four judges will evaluate the riding skills of the six riders in a series of technical challenges: an offset slalom course, circle drill, controlled ascents and descents, uphill slalom, sand recovery, sand relay, team trail challenge, barrel race and high speed maneuvering.

The Road to Spartanburg - The Selection Process

The prospect of a week-and-a-half riding in Tunisia on F 800 GS bikes with teams from Germany, Italy, Japan and Spain captured the imagination of GS fans throughout the United States, and nearly 100 riders made the first stage of the application process to be considered for Team USA. These riders were subject to an email ‘mental test’ specifically designed by a dedicated BMW team of moto-psychologists to determine whether potential participants had the right credentials to progress through to the next stage.

From the 96 initial applications - in many cases from superlative off-road riders with great experience and skill - the team selectors chose 20 semi-finalists that demonstrated the required levels of riding excellence, teamwork, character, physical fitness, a true love of the GS segment - and of course, a sense of humour under conditions of great stress.

All 20 successful riders were informed separately that they had advanced to the next round, while the 76 who didn’t ‘make the cut’ will receive a gift from BMW Motorrad to say thanks for participating and to encourage them to try again in 2009. The 20 International GS Trophy semi-finalists that remained were then subjected to further tests and all four judges commented that the process was quite difficult and took a lot of time to determine a final shortlist. The six chosen riders were then invited at BMW’s expense to participate in further testing at the BMW Performance Center, in Spartanburg, SC, on August 28.

This final test will decide which of the ‘Spartanburg Six’ (as they have become known) will become the “Tunisia Three” who will go on to represent the United States in the International GS Trophy in October. As BMW Motorrad USA’s Laurence Kuykendall explains, just getting down to the final six riders has been an extremely difficult task for his team.

“We’ve not only had many excellent riders to chose from, but the criteria was complex too, including not only riding ability and experience, but more intangible qualities like teamwork, personality, physical and psychological fitness, and the capability to spread the BMW faith. It would have been equally easy to end up with six other, equally deserving names, as the standard was so high, but as a consolation, there is always next year, when we will require new riders for the 2009 GS Trophy - wherever it might be!”

The BMW Motorrad 2008 International GS Trophy

The International GS Trophy is a skills-based contest with GS riders coming from all over the world for a final meeting to pick the best of the best in Tunisia, North Africa, October 15 - 24. The competition is not a race, but a lengthy and challenging ride, both on- and off-road, through the rugged countryside of Tunisia on new F 800 GS bikes. The event will include numerous tests in individual riding skills and group teamwork to overcome natural and manmade obstacles in the course of the ride.

A team of six riders will be selected to compete for the GS Trophy from each of the following BMW Motorrad markets: the United States, Germany, the UK, France, Italy and Japan. Three of the six riders will be journalists, while the remaining three will be GS owners selected by BMW Motorrad in each market.

The three GS owners selected to represent the United States in the 2008 International GS Trophy Competition will be required to report on their experiences on www.xplor.com. Therefore, writing, as well as riding, ability will be a criterion used to choose the GS Trophy competitors.

May the best riders win!

The 13th meeting in the World Championship calendar sees the series’ collective head up north to Dublin, the capital of the Republic of Ireland.

David Philippaerts took back the MX1 Championship lead with Steve Ramon slipping down to second after Loket.

In the MX2 class the exciting challenge in between team mates Tyla Rattray and Tommy Searle continues with the South African still leading by 20 points.

MX1

Losing the red plate in Lommel had set Yamaha Monster Motocross’ David Philippaerts on fire for the following round in Loket; the Italian went on to take his second season’s win in the Czech Republic, taking back the red plate as previous leader Steve Ramon managed to take fifth overall.

Phil08

Finding Italian venue Faenza at the end of a close MX1 Championship will be a burst for local rider and current Championship leader David Philippaerts

Though the Teka Suzuki WMX1 defending Champion is just seven points adrift as Philippaerts’ team mate Joshua Coppins sits in third with a 35 point gap.

The Kiwi is now chased by youngsters Jonathan Barragan of AXO KTM Silver Action and Ken de Dycker of Teka Suzuki WMX1, with the latter having been his team mate in the CAS Honda years.

Barragan is currently on a roll as he took his fourth consecutive podium in Loket after three back to back GP wins while De Dycker reinforced his Championship position with his latest podium in Lommel.

GPKR’s Sebastien Pourcel and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Max Nagl are both looking up in the standings.

The Frenchman was back on the podium in Loket, taking second overall as his latest rostrum finish of an overall win in France dated back to June 15.

On the other hand Nagl, who has been reconfirmed in next year’s works KTM squad, has been performing well especially since his second overall result in South Africa.

Alessio Chiodi is due to miss this GP and Lierop due to an arm problem as Gordon Crockard will return to action this weekend in Ireland.

Kevin Strijbos, who returned to action in Loket, aims at making up for a difficult Czech GP and so does Billy Mackenzie, crashing out of the opening heat after a promising start.

Another rider will miss this meeting: Cedric Melotte, who injured his right ankle in Lommel and is not yet fit enough to race.

Ramon08

Steve Ramon had a little taste of the red plate when he took it in Lommel; he lost it one week later in Loket though

MX2

Loket showed how tough is the battle in between Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team mates Tyla Rattray and Tommy Searle, who fought tooth and nail for victory in the Czech GP especially in the final moto.

Searle was the eventual winner though Rattray still holds the red plate with a 20 point cushion as he ended second overall and collected as many points as the Brit.

Rattray08

Tyla Rattray still leads from team mate Tommy Searle in a close MX2 standings

None of the two will give up their title chance as they are the only ones left with a solid possibility of taking their first ever World Championship.

Former rival and two time MX2 World Champion Tony Cairoli never raced again since Nelspruit’s knee injury but still holds the third place in the standings.

His position is Shaun Simpson, Nicolas Aubin and Rui Goncalves’ next target with the trio aiming at gaining one spot in the points standings.

Despite missing the Czech GP with a shoulder injury from practice, Simpson is still fourth and will fight back in Dublin, where the Scottish rider is extremely popular as he rides for the Northern Ireland based team KTM UK. Aubin and Goncalves follow in fifth and sixth.

Stephen Sword and Anthony Boissiere, with the latter completing the podium in Loket, can be other strong competitors in Dublin where Gareth Swanepoel will ride his first GP of the season after a wrist injury kept him out of the first 12 rounds.

Matteo Bonini and Pascal Leuret will also comeback after injuries.

Round 13 of the FIM Motocross World Championship will get underway this weekend in the incredibly well organized venue of Fairyhouse Racecourse in Ireland.

Due to the long term rain that has not facilitated the set up work at the venue around Dublin, there has been a little bit of a debate around the Irish GP but it settled in favour of the hard working event organizers.

The MCUI -organizer of the FIM Motocross Grand Prix of Ireland in Dublin- has made great work together with the co-operation of the Youthstream sport department and the Grand Prix of Ireland will take place as foreseen with the same standards, security, quality and show as we have the habit to supply for the entire Motocross World Championship.

Factory Effex, Inc. is proud to announce the newly formed multi year sponsorship program with Factory Yamaha, L&M Racing and Graves Motorsports as a key multifaceted sponsor. Factory Effex has built its brand on key race endorsement programs since its inception. It has allowed us the opportunity to build the brand, improve it’s products and showcase it’s association with the very highest level of racing.

Over the course of the last several months, Yamaha Motor Corp and Factory Effex have worked very hard to establish a new form of graphics sponsorship. Historically graphics companies are often utilized to meet the need of a product solution within many race team entities. We wanted to be a bigger part of a race team by approaching this as a “key” sponsor but also meeting the service needs of each of these teams”, stated Scott Gilly, Vice President of Factory Effex.

“All of us at Factory Effex are very excited about this newly formed relationship. We not only have aligned our selves with the very best Factory effort in off-road motorcycle racing, but we will have the opportunity to work with some of the sports top athletes that will be racing for Yamaha in 2009 and beyond; some in which we have had the privilege of working with in past team sponsorship programs.

We also made the decision to offer several new contributions to our sponsorship with these teams. We will be a key contributor in the design phase of team trucks, bikes, and apparel, along with many other new opportunities that have come with this new relationship.

We look forward to be a part of this winning Factory effort in the years to come.”
