Pulse Tech X-Xtreme Charge $99.95

In theory, your average motorcycle battery could last for eight to ten years. In reality, it doesn’t. In fact, it’s more like 6 to 48 months depending on how well you maintain it, and the reality is that only about 30% of batteries last for four years. The Pulse Tech X-xtreme charger, model XC100-M to be exact, may not get your battery to the ten-year mark, but if used religiously, should get you damn close.

This Week in Supercross: Toronto

Tomorrow night Toronto’s Rogers Centre will play host to the 10th stop of the 2010 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, season. While the premier AMA Supercross class championship points lead is controlled by Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey, all eyes will be on Canada’s own Dean Wilson, who will be racing in the Eastern Regional AMA Supercross Lites class championship.

Wilson, 18, grew up racing in Alberta where he racked up several amateur national championships in both Canada and the U.S. Before making the transition to his professional career, Wilson was named the outstanding rider of the year at the amateur national championships. With his professional license in hand, Wilson transplanted in Southern California to chase his childhood dream of winning an AMA Supercross/Motocross Championship.

On February 20th this year, Wilson made his professional debut at Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium, finishing an impressive sixth place against the world’s top AMA Supercross Lites class riders. The following week at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome he crossed the finishing in fourth place before nearly 70,000 fans. Wilson reached a milestone last weekend at the legendary Daytona International Speedway when he earned the first podium finish of his career, finishing third.

“This is going to be a great race,” said Wilson. “There will be a lot of fans cheering for me and I hope I give them something to cheer about. Getting on the podium was good last week, and that’s where I want to be every week.”

His efforts moved him into third place in the Eastern Regional AMA Supercross Lites class points standings with 53 points. Each weekend, Wilson has improved his results, using each race as a stepping stone to stay on the podium.

“I learned a lot and I’m taking what I learned and I’m going to work hard during the week to correct some mistakes.”

Wilson’s teammate Christophe Pourcel has won three consecutive Eastern Regional AMA Supercross Lites class main events and has a nine-point lead over Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki’s Austin Stroupe heading into Toronto.

“Toronto should be a good event for me,” said Pourcel. “It is the biggest stadium floor we race on so there are a lot of obstacles which usually means a technical track. I think the more technical track the better so I can keep riding well and keep getting on the podium.”

Pourcel and Stroupe have finished first and second respectively at every race this season.

“Being consistent is building my confidence as we head into Toronto,” said Stroupe. “It’s getting a little old (finished second), but I’d rather be here than DNFing. I’m building on a lot of things I’ve lacked the last two years, so the team is helping me and we’re working together. I’m ready to race every weekend.”

GEICO Powersports Honda racers Justin Barcia and Brett Metcalfe are going strong aboard their Honda CRF250Rs in the Eastern Regional AMA Supercross Lites class, and week after week are continue to be in the thick of the racing action.

“I definitely have the speed to be up front and I have shown that at every race this season,” said Barcia. “I just have to put it all together come race day. Mike LaRocco works really hard to help me get accustomed to the whole pro racing scene and I know it’s only a matter of time before I get that win. We are quietly confident it will happen; it’s just a matter of me piecing everything both on and off track together and finding what works for me.”

In the AMA Supercross class, Dungey, who has three wins and three additional podium finishes, has a 20-point lead over Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto. Villopoto has four wins on the season but a 19th-place finish in Atlanta hindered his overall position in point standings. Last weekend in Daytona, Villopoto scored the fourth win of the season.

“The championship is still in reach,” said Villopoto. “I just need to keep getting good starts and riding strong throughout the race. You never know what is going to happen so I have to put myself in position to capitalize on my competitors mistakes.”

Dungey’s consistency has helped keep him head of the pack. Through the first nine races of the season, he has finished inside the top 10.

“I feel confident going into Toronto,” said Dungey. “I think we just have to keep racing one race at a time and just enjoy the season.”

Dungey’s Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki teammate Matt Moss remains on the injured reserve list, creating an opportunity for Western Regional AMA Supercross Lites class rider Ryan Morais to fill in for the open position. In his first AMA Supercross class race of his career, Morais finished 10th.

“I feel like I could’ve done better in Daytona, but I’ll build off of it and get better,” said Morais. “I think now that my first-race jitters are gone, I can relax a little going into Toronto.”

Bowers and Demuth Trading Momentum

Only three rounds remain in the 2010 AMA Arenacross Series and this weekend, Babbitt’s Monster Energy/TiLUBE Kawasaki teammates Tyler Bowers and Josh Demuth will resume their battle atop the point standings from Council Bluffs, Iowa’s Mid America Center over the course of two nights of action. As the races wind down, the pair is engaged in a back-and-forth battle, trading victories and grabbing podiums during the homestretch.

Bowers is the man to beat, leading his teammate by 17 points with five races to go. Additionally, he boasts a series-high eight victories which has proven to be the edge in the standings. While Demuth’s four wins have kept him in the thick of the title fight, it is his performance over the last month of the season that has ignited the season-ending showdown between he and Bowers.

Demuth has been the hottest rider in the series and continued to prove it last weekend in Reno, capturing the win on Friday night and posting a runner-up finish on Saturday. However, Bowers answered the call, achieving the same results. Consequently, the top of the standings stayed stagnant. The challenge for Bowers over the next three weeks will be to keep Demuth’s advances at bay. The two time AMA Arenacross Series champion doesn’t appear to be slowing down and should Bowers experience any misfortune, there is a good chance Demuth will be the first to take advantage of it.

The showdown will continue this weekend from the Mid America Center and you can assure that despite the comfortable advantage, Bowers will give it his all in an effort to make it clear that there was never a doubt as to who the rider to beat in 2010 was. If the Kentucky native was to finish on the podium for the rest of the season, a task well within reach for Bowers, he would make it tough on Demuth to make a move unless he won each of the five remaining races. But with eight wins to his credit already this season, Bowers is more interested in making a clean sweep of the rest of the year and bringing the total to lucky number 13.

In the AMA Arenacross Lites Western Regional Championship, GPF/Babbitt’s Kawasaki’s A.J. Catanzaro is slowly becoming an AMA Arenacross Series star. In Reno, Catanzaro showcased the most dominating AMA Arenacross Lites class performance of the season. The rookie competitor grabbed the holeshot on both Friday and Saturday night and went on to lead all 36 total laps in the pair of main events. By virtue of his stellar outing, Catanzaro now holds a 25-point advantage over Cory Green in the Western Region and with the penultimate round commencing this weekend in Council Bluffs, another strong weekend will make him a virtual lock to the title.

The Mid America Center sits just across the Missouri River from the city of Omaha. It serves as part of the convention center complex for the city of Council Bluffs and is the primary home of the Iowa Blackhawks of the American Professional Football League. Along with the prequel race in Des Moines, this is the AMA Arenacross Series’ second visit to the state of Iowa during the current race season.

The first gates drop on the Council Bluffs Arenacross this Friday at 7:00 p.m., followed by an additional night of bar-to-bar racing on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Amateur Day concludes an exciting weekend of action on Sunday, beginning at 10 a.m.

Dirt Rider Ride Day Preview Video

The Pros’ Show

Dirt Rider Magazine’s famed Torture Test/24-Hour Test has become extinct–at least for a little while. In light of the current strain on the economy, having companies build us bikes to abuse for a few days doesn’t make much sense and, more importantly, we wouldn’t learn much in 2010 about the ultimate off-road bikes because there are few new players and Last Year’s Winner would probably show up and clean house again. So, instead of all work and no play, we decided to have a ride day (like everyone else) and have some fun. But, that doesn’t mean we didn’t work. Since we’d have every major off-road team on hand we racked up as many Pro Tips as possible for a special future issue. We also shot some very cool bikes. But you don’t have to sit here and read about it. Check out the video Ignition3.tv put together for us to get all the details. Oh, and don’t forget to check back later in the week for some sneak peeks at the Pro Tips you’ll see in Dirt Rider soon.

Mototanx Water Storage Tank Review – EDM

Let’s face it, riding off-road is a messy activity, sometimes really messy. The fact that we get dirty plays a major role in why we enjoy it, romping through the mud and muck keeps us young and vibrant. The flip side to all the fun is the challenge of keeping your bike clean. While bike cleaning is critical, it’s not always the easiest thing to do. Especially when you consider how little free time most people have these days. Going riding often requires some juggling of the schedule and we are usually beat when we get home, making washing the bike the last thing on our list of things to do. Add a spouse and children wanting your attention to the mix and it gets even more thorny.

In an effort to maintain our sanity while trying to wedge more and more into smaller time slots we have started washing our bikes at the track or riding area when we have finished riding. This leaves the bike basically ready to ride the next time we are ready to go. The factory teams do it. Why shouldn’t we? As an additional benefit, our transport vehicle is much cleaner than it used to be and so is the EDM shop. Since we already had a gas powered pressure washer, all we really needed was a water source. Which, is the one thing we have struggled with in creating our mobile cleaning system. Water containers can be found easily, they come in all shapes and sizes. The trouble however, was finding one that didn’t require us to sacrifice so much of the precious space in our vehicle.

Say hello to the solution to this problem, the Van Tank from Mototanx.

Constructed of 1/8” thick, TIG welded aluminum, the Mototanx – Van Tank is super sturdy and can carry up to 65 gallons of water. It measures 65″ by 22″ deep by 11″ high, has baffles inside the tank to prevent the sloshing of water when you brake or go around corners, weighs just 65lbs empty, and has built-in wheel chocks and tie down grommets so you don’t need to drill holes in your vehicle to make the most of these options.

The Mototanx, Van Tank fits neatly into our Chevy Express van just behind the front seats and acts as a bench seat after the bikes have been unloaded, a nice feature for changing into and out of riding gear. Holes are provided for mounting the tank to the floor but we found with the weight of even one bike, the tank didn’t move around at all. Two full sized bikes fit neatly into the deep/wide wheel chocks leaving tons of room for riding gear and all the other junk we wind up bringing to the track to be piled on top. Simply slide your front wheel into the wheel cutout, attach your tie downs to the grommets and your handle bar and you are done loading. We found that the first bike in needed to be pulled tighter than the second to leave room for the bars to overlap.

The built in tie-down grommets are seriously secured to the Van Tank via TIG welding. You will want tie-downs with carabineer ends as hook ends would fall out of the grommet opening creating a frustrating loading experience. Not that we’ve ever had trouble loading bikes to go riding!

As this photo illustrates, the low profile Van Tank uses very little space in the vehicle.

A two inch filler cap makes filling the Van Tank a breeze. A hose spigot is attached to the bottom for easy side door access.

The spigot can be relocated to an optional mounting position at the front, depending on your placement needs.

Washing our bikes at the track has proven to yield several benefits. We are now riding bikes that are cleaned more often, the bikes that need service between rides are ready and easier to be worked on because they are already clean, and we are not stressed about having to fit a bike wash in before the next ride. It’s already done before we get back to the shop!

We love the Van Tank from Mototanx and we are certain you will too.

New Extreme MX Series Begins April 18th!

Orange County, New York may be famous for it’s American Choppers, but there’s a new kid in town, the Xtreme Motocross Series. In its first year of operation, the Xtreme Motocross Series has secured 4 exciting tracks with a total of 7 events. The first of these events will be held at Walden Motocross in Wallkill, NY on April 18th.
What’s in it for the riders?

What makes the Xtreme Motocross Series so different is that we XMS uses the most technologically advanced online sign up and scoring systems. We then integrate that with advanced technology on the XMS website to allow riders the ability to see their lap times in near real-time, thereby enhancing the general riding experience. XMS also utilizes hi-tech video and still photography at all of our events to ensure the maximum media exposure for the riders and their sponsors.

Yes, both riders and sponsors benefit from these features as it adds weight to their individual and/or team marketing programs. Web 2.0 social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter are integrated on our website so riders can spread the word about their riding results and the sponsor items they used to achieve them.

Exciting racing action is guaranteed in the XMS. We are tired of champions being decided halfway through the season and we are doing something about it. Using a unique points system, we have designed the XMS so no champions will be decided before the last race. You’ll have to be in it to win it…

Lastly, XMS will be filming all season for a HD highlights DVD that will be available for all. We could go on and on but these are just a few benefits for the riders, associated teams and sponsors.

What’s in it for the sponsors?

XMS believes strongly that our industry sponsors are absolutely vital to the continued healthy growth of motocross. And also that sponsors sometimes do not reap the benefits that they expect. We want to change that. We commit to using 100% of our expertise to gain maximum exposure for our series sponsors. XMS offers a large range of sponsorship opportunities, from individual product awards to full title series sponsorships. Here are just a few of our newest sponsors below:

Why should riders and sponsors attend this event?

The staff at XMS have worked hard all year to combine exciting elements of racing with a safe, family oriented environment for everyone. We started this series because we strongly believed we could combine the best aspects of local amateur motocross with modern technology and marketing, allowing riders and teams to enjoy the benefits and obtain the maximum marketing exposure for their race programs. Just as riders enjoy the benefits of sponsorship programs, they must step up and try to give back the maximum exposure right back. We can help that happen.

How do riders join the XMS?

It’s quick and easy. Go to www.XtremeMXSeries.com to register.

The 2010 XtremeMXSeries Schedule:

  • April 18 – Walden Motocross, Wallkill, New York
  • May 23 – Island Motocross, Yaphank, Long Island
