Lane Split Lights Bangkok
Motivational Poster Lane splitting

The French government are looking at removing the last freedom motorcycle have in France; lane-splitting (filtering). Many years it was tolerated, now they want to make it illegal.

The French Angry Biker Association (FFMC) is planning a protest day on March the 13th. They will be asking all bikers to stay in the lane during rush hour, adding 100,000’s of vehicles to the traffic jams.

That should show the authorities why it’s a stupid idea…

South Africa Scenic Pass
Video clip

South Africa are using motorcycles (but obviously not exclusively) to promote tourism to their country.

Their tourist information website even has a page dedicated to motorcycle adventurers. How cool is that for a country?

Enduropale 2010 race start
Enduropale 2010 Mickael Pichon

After an upset for the winner, due to a too loud motorcycle, Mickael Pichon won the 2010 Le Touquet Enduropale beach motorcycle race.

1050 motorcycles started, and there were several leaders in the 3 hour race. But to loose on a too loud exhaust must be a first…

Games have come along way since my all time favorite Excite Bike on the NES but with today’s consoles pushing out more power than your moms microwave, there is no wonder companies like THQ are coming up with awe inspiring graphics, excitement and realism while being so immersive.

Like many of you I’m sure, I have spent countless hours playing the demo of MX vs ATV reflex. I know Sugar Ridge better than my local track and even started dreaming about nailing the elusive quad after the rolling whoops. When I finally received the final version I was excited to get to play a couple more tracks and get online to battle some of my moto rivals. The first part happened but second fell well short, but more on that in a minute.

When you fire up the game for the first time you are given the opportunity to customize your rider and run through some pretty standard rider training programs to keep your rubber side where it belongs. If you played the demo as much as I did, you skipped the foreplay and headed straight to Moto Career to unlock some of the new tracks. It takes a little while to work your way through the various tracks and different formats but it’s good fun and entertaining. The new “reflex” rider/bike separation is a big improvement and after a couple laps its fairly easy to get the hang of. Another really cool feature which added to the realism is the real-time dirt and track deformation where ruts and lines are formed based on where you and the other competitors actually ride. This adds to the excitement and adds a level of unpredictability to each lap. Crash prevention is another new feature which makes the game easier to play, when you are about to crash it displays a directional arrow on the screen which you have to press on the controller to avoid a crash, it works 90% of time but can also cause you to crash if there is an obstacle in the suggested direction.

The new freestyle mode is pretty cool too, with improvements made to the controls and the wide variety of tricks. Besides the motocross and supercross tracks other track and game types include waypoint, freestyle, champion sport track, free ride and omnicross. The game also has a couple arcade style modes which are fun including tag, snake and target practice. In total the game has 41 different tracks and courses which is really impressive. Winning events earns you cash and gives you the ability to unlock tracks and also make purchases of vehicles, parts and gear.

The biggest disappointment of the game comes from a problem well known to most users and Rainbow studios. I have spent countless hours riding around the practice track waiting for other players to join with no luck. You need the ability to create and join rooms prior to the game starting. Another issue with online game plays is that you cannot choose how many laps to race (3 is default). It sounds like Rainbow are trying to fix the issues but we will have to wait and see what comes out of it.

To date they have already released a down-loadable content pack with new tracks, gear and vehicles. They have a second pack which was released on February 4th.

Overall, MX games have come a long way since Excite Bike and this game is no exception. For me its hands down the most realistic MX game to date and I hope that Rainbow Studios continue to develop the title for improved future releases. To me the title would get 5 out of 5 but due to the online issues it gets a 4 out of 5.

KTM on Saturday launched a strong line-up of international MX stars for the 2010 World Championship racing season and introduced the new KTM 350-SX-F on the eve of the Star Mantova pre-season event in Mantova, Italy, which heralds a new era for the company and for racing.

KTM’s CEO Stefan Pierer told reporters that the company was proud to be fielding the Red Bull Factory Racing team, which is capable of winning both the MX1 and MX2 World Championship titles. He said the new bike, first shown at the EICMA in Milan in November was a true symbol of the KTM Ready to Race philosophy.

“Our factory riders are proven talent and we as a company recognise that the real race is not just on the track but also off it. That is why we strive to produce cutting edge technology and to have it reflected in products like the new KTM 350 SX-F,” Pierer said.

The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing factory team, which includes three current world champions and two vice world champions plus some exciting young talent, is the result of a three year development plan shaped by KTM’s Offroad Sport Director Pit Beirer and 10-times MX world champion Stefan Everts, the Team Director. The two, once rivals on the track at the top of the sport, agreed in late 2006 to work together to shape a KTM factory team capable of taking both MX1 and MX2 world titles.

The year 2010, which follows two seasons where KTM’s factory riders dominated the MX2 class, is one that Beirer and Everts hope to make a similar impression in MX1 with riders of the calibre of Antonio Cairoli, Max Nagl, the MX1 reigning vice world champion and Rui Goncalves, vice world champion of MX2 who moves up a class. Meanwhile, French MX2 world champion Marvin Musquin , Scotsman Shaun Simpson and 15-year old Jeffrey Herlings, considered by Beirer and Everts to be one of the brightest up-and-coming talents are after the MX2 honours. The factory team line-up is further strengthened by WMX World Champion Steffi Laier who is going for back-to-back world titles in 2010 and who races with the men in Sunday’s Star Mantova.

“Our Ready to Race philosophy means we must have the best factory riders on our KTM bikes but we must also consider the next generation of young talent. The Red Bull KTM Racing Team is a good reflection of this and we are confident that we can be a force to be reckoned with in both MX1 and MX2 this season. It is also a great vote of confidence from the private teams that this season there will be more than 20 KTM bikes in the GP paddock,” Beirer said.

Everts has been an important influence on the development of the KTM 350 SX-F, which is respectfully referred to as his “baby”. The bike heralds a new era for KTM product development and features both fuel injection and linkage. Developers, in constant consultation with Everts, set out to create a bike that is almost as light to handle as a 250, with an all new chassis and frame and the pro lever linkage system for increased controllability even on the most brutal tracks on the Grand Prix calendar and match it with typical KTM motor power. In 2010 the factory team will also be onboard the proven 250 SX-F and the 450 SX-F bikes. Both machines have benefited enormously from KTM’s big development program for the revolutionary new 350 SX-F, which had such strong support from Everts and the company’s R&D team.

“We are excited to see what both our factory riders and bikes are going to produce in 2010,” Everts said. “The 350 SX-F launches a new era for MX racing and it’s also a reflection of the company’s commitment to racing and to producing the best offroad machines for anyone who shares the same passion as we do.”

How To: Keep Your Bike Alive with Routine Motorcycle Maintenance

Going the Distance

I was a little surprised when someone recently asked me if it was possible to rack up a hundred thousand (or more) miles on a late model cruiser without making any major repairs, and if it was, what sort of maintenance it would take to do it. My knee-jerk reaction was to start cataloging all the things that would need doing, but the more I considered the question, the more I realized that while all devices are subject to the whims of mechanical misfortune, the current crop of motorcycles are for the most part as reliable as anvils, and, barring any unforeseen mishaps, will last almost as long while needing only slightly more attention.inline_mediumwraptextright26152097/tech/1002_crup_routine_motorcycle_maintenance1002_crup_02_z+going_the_distance+.jpgTrue
